- Preparation:
- Clear the room of furniture, rugs, and any other obstacles.
- Seal off any vents, ducts, or openings in the room to prevent dust from spreading to other areas.
- Ensure proper ventilation in the room by opening windows and doors.
- Wear appropriate safety gear, including goggles, a dust mask, and ear protection.
- Initial Sanding with Belt Sander (36 Grit):
- Attach a coarse 36 grit sandpaper to the belt sander with excellent dust extraction capabilities.
- Begin sanding diagonally (cross-cutting) across the floor to level uneven areas and remove imperfections.
- Move the belt sander steadily across the floor, overlapping each pass slightly to ensure even sanding and a consistent level.
- The excellent dust extraction system of the belt sander should capture the majority of dust generated during sanding.
- Straight Sanding with Belt Sander (60 Grit):
- Replace the sandpaper on the belt sander with a 60 grit sandpaper.
- Sand the floor parallel to the wood grain (straight cut) to further refine the surface and remove cross-cut marks.
- Ensure even sanding across the entire floor surface.
- Secondary Sanding with Trio Machine:
- Start with a 60 grit sanding disc on the Trio machine.
- Work the Trio machine across the floor, overlapping each pass to ensure uniform sanding.
- Repeat the process with 80 grit, then 100 grit sanding discs to progressively refine the surface.
- Finish with a 120 grit sanding disc to achieve a smooth and uniform finish.
- Edging with Edging Machine:
- Utilize the edging machine to sand along the edges and corners of the room where the belt sander and Trio machine couldn't reach.
- Ensure thorough sanding along all edges and corners to maintain consistency across the floor surface.
- Detail Sanding with Festool Rotex Sander:
- Attach a fine grit sandpaper to the Festool Rotex sander.
- Use the Festool Rotex sander to blend any areas that may require additional smoothing or feathering.
- Pay special attention to transitions between different sections of the floor.
- Corner Sanding with Corner Tool:
- Use a corner tool to sand hard-to-reach corners and tight spaces where other sanding tools couldn't reach.
- Ensure thorough sanding in all corners to maintain consistency across the floor surface.
- Scraping (if necessary):
- If there are stubborn areas of finish or adhesive residue that couldn't be removed with sanding alone, use a scraper to carefully scrape away these materials.
- Take care not to gouge or damage the wood surface while scraping.
- Final Inspection and Cleaning:
- Inspect the floor carefully to ensure that it's uniformly sanded and free of imperfections.
- Vacuum the floor thoroughly using a HEPA vacuum or a dust extractor to remove any remaining dust and debris.
By following these steps and utilizing a combination of dust-free sanding tools with appropriate grits, you can effectively sand a floor surface while minimizing dust exposure and achieving high-quality results for your floor refinishing.
